Bengaluru, August 2 — The Central Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested two individuals in connection with the online abuse directed at actor and former Mandya MP Divya Spandana, widely known as Ramya. The accused, identified as Obanna and Gangadhar, were apprehended for allegedly posting vulgar, threatening, and misogynistic comments targeting Spandana on social media.
The arrests were made after Spandana filed a formal complaint with the Bengaluru Police Commissioner on July 28, naming 43 social media accounts responsible for sending her abusive messages, including death and rape threats. The online abuse reportedly began on July 26, following her social media post supporting the Supreme Court’s remarks in the Renukaswamy murder case, in which Kannada actor Darshan is a key accused. In her post, she had also demanded justice for the victim's family.
Soon after her post, Spandana was subjected to a barrage of obscene and threatening messages across multiple platforms. The Cyber Crime Police acted on her complaint, tracing several accounts and initiating legal action. During interrogation, both arrested individuals reportedly confessed to their involvement.
In addition to the arrests, 11 more individuals have been identified for their roles in similar online abuse, and legal proceedings are being initiated against them. So far, more than 48 social media accounts have been flagged, and further investigation is underway to trace all those involved.
When asked whether the abuse was linked to fan activity related to Darshan, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh stated that the connection is still under investigation. He confirmed that both the CCB and Cyber Crime Police are actively working on the case.
Following the arrests, Divya Spandana expressed her gratitude to Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara and Commissioner Singh for their swift action. She remarked that a firm stand had been taken against "misogynistic aggression" and stated, “The message is clear: It is difficult to escape the hand of law when it comes to protecting women’s dignity and ensuring safety in our city.”
