Raghogarh (Madhya Pradesh), 16 July 2025 –
In a tragic incident, 42-year-old Deepak Mahabar, a well-known snake rescuer from Katra Mohalla, lost his life after being bitten by a snake he had just rescued.
On Monday afternoon, Mahabar received a call – one of the many he had attended over the years – about a snake spotted in a house in Barbatpura locality. As usual, he rushed to the location, caught the snake, and wrapped it around his neck to head back. On the way, he stopped to pick up his son from school, still carrying the live snake on his shoulders.
While returning home on his motorcycle, the snake bit him on the hand. Despite the bite, Mahabar managed to call a friend for help and was rushed to a local hospital in Raghogarh, later referred to Guna district hospital.
Doctors said his condition initially improved, and he returned home. However, his health suddenly deteriorated during the night, and he was brought back to the hospital where he died during treatment at around 4 am on Tuesday.
A video taken just before the bite shows Mahabar on his bike, with the snake wrapped around his neck.
Mahabar worked as a volunteer snake catcher with JP University, helping people for over a decade and never charging a rupee for his services. “He would always respond when someone needed help,” said a friend. “Sadly, this time it cost him his life.”
The police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
