Mohali, October 14: A shocking incident unfolded in Mullanpur, Mohali, where a 55-year-old trader, Rajesh Kumar Soni, died of a heart attack after a counter-intelligence team allegedly pointed revolvers at a group of businessmen playing cards.
Soni was immediately rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Another person collapsed and was admitted to GMCH-16, Chandigarh. Police confirmed that the deceased was a heart patient with a prior history of heart attacks.
According to reports, five officials in civilian clothes raided the spot following an intelligence input about gambling and detained several local traders, including garment shop owners, jewellers, and property dealers.
However, local residents claimed the group was merely playing cards in the open market area — a routine Monday pastime — when the officers arrived and drew their weapons without identifying themselves.
Panic ensued, leading to chaos as angry residents surrounded and assaulted two officers before senior police officials intervened. DSP Mullanpur Dharamvir Singh and SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh rushed to the site to restore order.
The police assured locals that a thorough probe will be conducted and appropriate action taken based on findings.
