Earthquake Jolts Delhi-NCR; Panic in Jhajjar, Gurugram, Meerut

July 10, 2025 03:45 PM

New Delhi / Jhajjar, July 10, 2025:

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Jhajjar in Haryana on Thursday morning, triggering panic across the Delhi-NCR region. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the tremors were recorded at 9:04 a.m. with the epicentre located 3 km northeast of Jhajjar and about 51 km west of Delhi, at a depth of 10 km.

Tremors were felt across Jhajjar, Rohtak, Gurugram, Hisar, Panipat, and Meerut, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in fear. In many localities, people were seen standing in open areas, barefoot and still in nightwear, reflecting the shock and urgency of the moment.

“It was a strong jolt. I think this is the first time in my life that it felt so strong,” said an elderly man from Jhajjar.

In Delhi’s Vikaspuri, Sultan Khan, a local resident, described the experience as "unnerving."

“We suddenly felt the ground shaking and ran out of our house. First the heat, then the overnight rain, and now this — it’s been very uncomfortable,” he said.

Ahmad Ali, another resident, recalled:

“It was a scary moment. The tremors didn’t last long but were strong enough to wake us up. My children are still frightened.”

Some families, especially in low-rise buildings and older structures, chose to stay outside for nearly an hour after the tremors fearing aftershocks.

No reports of casualties or structural damage have been reported so far, but the incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the region to seismic activity.
