A political controversy erupted in Pune after a group of Hindu organisations, led by BJP MP Medha Kulkarni, performed a “purification ceremony” at the historic Shaniwar Wada following a viral video showing Muslim women offering Namaz at the fort.
The ceremony involved cleaning the site with gaumutra (cow urine) and performing Shiv Vandana. Kulkarni stated that Shaniwar Wada, a symbol of the Maratha empire, should not be a place for Namaz and urged strict action against those involved.
Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane supported her stance, emphasizing the fort’s historical significance to the Hindu community.
Opposition leaders condemned the action. NCP spokesperson Rupali Patil Thombre accused Kulkarni of inciting communal tension, while AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan criticized the BJP for spreading hatred and violating the secular principles of India. He highlighted that Article 25 of the Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion.
Police Response:
A case has been filed against the women offering Namaz based on an ASI complaint. Security at the fort has been tightened, and police confirmed that all actions will follow ASI regulations.
“Religious prayers were offered inside the ASI-protected monument. We will act as per the ASI’s complaint and maintain security,” officials said.
