Washington, D.C.: United States President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to China, saying there would be “consequences” if Beijing attempts to invade Taiwan, a key U.S. ally.
Speaking in an interview with CBS on Sunday, Trump asserted that China “would not invade Taiwan, at least while I’m President, because it understands the consequences.” However, he did not specify what actions the U.S. might take in such a scenario, saying only, “You’ll find out if it happens.”
The remarks come days after Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea during the APEC summit, where both sides discussed trade and diplomatic issues. Notably, Taiwan was not mentioned during the talks.
The comments also follow a slight easing of tensions between the two nations after years of trade disputes. Trump’s latest statement, however, signals a renewed hardline stance on China’s actions in the Indo-Pacific region.
Observers note that Trump’s warning underscores Washington’s continued commitment to Taiwan’s defense, even as Beijing maintains its claim over the self-ruled island.
